Butterfield Canyon in the Oquirrh Mountains connects Herriman in the southwest Salt Lake Valley through Middle Canyon to the city of Toole on the other side.

Directions

Butterfield Canyon is just south of Kennecott Copper Mine and popular as a scenic drive, especially in the fall. It begins at the west end of Herriman’s Main Street (about 13305 South and 9000 West). The opposite end begins in Toole at Middle Canyon.

Yellow Fork Canyon and Rose Canyon are nearby to the south.

There are a couple small parking areas in the first few miles of the canyon. Higher up the road gets quite narrow and it can be difficult to pass at parts. The road hugs the canyon wall with a drop off. The views also open up!

At the ridge, there is a small parking area and the Butterfield Peak Trailhead. The views from there are dramatic. This is looking east towards the Salt Lake Valley.

Here are the views looking west to Toole. The road is an improved dirt road on this west end through Middle Canyon. You can also head south up higher along a dirt road.

The most beautiful fall leaves are further down.
