If you want a fun day in the dunes near Kanab, Coral Pink Sand Dune State Park is a perfect place! Sand sleds, sand boards, Razors, 4-wheelers, and dirt bikes and even kids rolling down the dunes.
Here is the view from just above the parking lot, looking towards the sledding hills. It’s about 0.15 miles to the sledding hill, so it only takes a few minutes to walk over, even in the soft sand.
You can rent sand sleds and sand boards (like snow boards) for $25/day from the entrance center. We rented one sand board and they also give you a square of wax to slick up your sled. We had brought three snow sleds from home. We put the wax on those too and they worked just as well as the sand board.
We saw some people enjoying the dunes on motorized vehicles, but they kept a safe distance from the sledding hill.
Camping is available here and it is a fairly dark sky for Night Sky Photography. This photo was taken nearby the same day on my first attempt at night photography.
Other hikes nearby are the Belly of the Dragon, Kanab Sand Caves, and Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch. Zion and Bryce National Parks are within an hour.
