Desolation Lake is a beautiful alpine lake along the ridge between Big Cottonwood Canyon and Millcreek Canyon. This trail begins in Big Cottonwood Canyon and Dog Lake is along this same trail. You may see mountain bikers so keep an eye out.
Directions
The trail begins at Mill D North Fork, which is across the street from the Donut Falls winter gate. As of 12/01/24 this is a fee area $10/vehicle for a 3-day pass, $20/vehicle for a 7-day pass, $60/vehicle for a year pass, or $80/vehicle for the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass that includes all the National Parks and Monuments in the country.

The trail heads up the hill and then heads off to the right up the hill.
As you get higher, the views are great!

The trail heads back through the mountains towards Millcreek Canyon.
The trail parellels a stream for a while.
Keep an eye out for stinging nettle. They have fuzzy leaves. The little hairs are very irritating. If you brush against it, be sure to rinse it off to reduce the pain and itch.
Keep following the trail through the aspens and pines. It is lovely with wildflowers.
There is junction Dog Lake. Continue right for Desolation Lake.
The trail continues gradually uphill, with some mountain views and meadows.
You may see moose or deer along this hike. I loved seeing this mom and baby!
Continue along the path.
Soon you can see Desolation Lake.
