Stairs Gulch is a hike with dramatic views in Big Cottonwood Canyon that features a stream and beautiful fall foliage.

Stairs Gulch begins near the Storm Mountain Picnic Area about 4 minutes up Big Cottonwood Canyon.

From the parking area, the trail leads to the right down the canyon for a few minutes.

About 50 feet past the parking the trail shifts to the left to head up the canyon. The first part of the trail is easy, but gets progressively steeper. I wouldn’t recommend this for young children or for those who have trouble with uneven surfaces.

Soon you come up above the tree line and to the stream.

We weren’t sure which side was the trail, so we split up and each took a side.

Generally it was easier on the left side of the stream. Either way there are periods where the trail is unclear. The stream has some little waterfalls as you climb.

The most spectacular part of the hike are the views behind.

It is definitely picturesque.

There isn’t a specific ending, so you can just climb until you reach your desired view or when it becomes too much of a scramble.
